Day One Access
Why Day One Access?
The cost of printed textbooks has increased tremendously over the last 30 years and used/rental copies are harder to acquire, so some students skip purchasing materials. Day One Access lets the bookstore negotiate lower digital prices (up to 80% less than print) and deliver materials on or before the first day of class.
What is the Day One Access Process?
- Instructors choose the course content.
- The bookstore negotiates the lowest price with the publisher.
- Students who register receive an email with CourseDen access, billing details, and how to opt out.
- On the first day of class, access is granted in CourseDen and the charge is billed to BanWeb; students who drop during add/drop are automatically opted out and not billed.
Why do I have a Day One charge on my account?
One or more of your courses are using UWG’s Day One Access program to provide low-cost digital materials.
How much does Day One Access cost?
Costs vary by platform and content but are usually less than buying directly from the publisher/vendor and can be up to 80% cheaper than a printed text.
I’m a Dual Enroll or GA’s Best student. Why am I being charged?
If your class uses Day One Access, the materials charge will be removed from your account; if you paid before removal, you will receive a refund for that amount.
When/How do I pay the Day One Access fee?
The charge posts to your BanWeb account on the first day of class. Pay through the Office of Student Accounts and Billing Services. Available financial aid may be applied automatically.
How do I access the digital textbook?
In CourseDen, open your course, go to Tools → Digital Textbooks (Day One Access). Choose Read Now or Launch Courseware to access materials; use Opt-Out during drop/add if you don’t want the charge. If your course uses publisher activities, check that same link or your course content area; ask your instructor if you still can’t find required activities.
Can I download my digital textbook?
Yes. Use the Vital Source Bookshelf app for desktop or mobile. Create/sign in with your UWG email to link your books.
What does “opt-out” mean?
Opting out means you decline Day One Access and will obtain materials another way. If you opt out by the end of add/drop, the charge is removed and you lose Day One Access to the materials; opting out after that period may not be possible.
How do I opt-out of the digital textbook?
Once your class begins, in CourseDen go to Tools → Digital Textbooks (Day One Access) and select Opt-Out for the relevant course. If you have trouble, email dayone@westga.edu.
What is the deadline to opt-out?
The last day of the drop/add period (see The SCOOP for dates).
When will refunds be processed after I opt-out?
Refunds are processed with other student account refunds approximately 25–30 days after the semester starts. For billing questions, contact Student Accounts and Billing Services.
If I change my mind after I opt-out, can I opt back in?
Yes, until the end of the last day of add/drop. After that, email dayone@westga.edu to request access.
What happens if I drop the course?
If you drop during add/drop, you are automatically opted out and not charged; allow 3–5 days for the charge to clear. If you drop after add/drop, you will be charged for the Day One Access materials.
Why is my textbook asking me to log in?
Some platforms require an account tied to your UWG email. VitalSource: create/sign in to a Bookshelf account (also enables the app). Cengage: create or sign in to your Cengage account; use the password reset if needed.
I don’t see my question here. Who should I contact for help?
For materials/access/opt-out issues, email dayone@westga.edu and include your course(s). For billing/account questions, contact Student Accounts and Billing Services.
